The Micro:bit Series

Signals and Stillness

Ages 7 - 11

Young coders explore core programming concepts such as input, output, conditionals, and randomness through engaging projects built with the Micro:bit’s sensors, buttons, and lights. Each activity pairs coding with a mindfulness practice to support focus, emotional awareness, and creative expression. Open to all experience levels, the series helps coders discover how simple signals, whether from the device or their own thoughts, can guide both digital design and inner calm.

In this Series:

Lab 1

Mood Maker

In the "Mood Maker" lab, we create personalized emotion displays using micro:bit controllers and creative design. Through mindfulness exercises and interactive programming, we learn to recognize and express our feelings while building simple programs that respond to button inputs.

> Mindfulness Focus

Naming and expressing emotions

> Coding Focus

Button input, LED display, simple branching (on button A/B pressed)

> Objectives

To help coders understand how naming emotions can support self-awareness and build simple programs that reflect emotional states using button inputs.

Lab 2

Color Coder

The "Color Coder" lab explores the connection between our physical energy and digital expression by programming micro:bit devices to display colors that match our internal states. Through body awareness exercises and conditional programming, we map different energy levels to colorful LED patterns while learning to use multiple input methods like buttons and gestures.

> Mindfulness Focus

Mind-body awareness and energy check-ins

> Coding Focus

Conditional display with multiple inputs (buttons, gestures), simulated color states

> Objectives

To support mind-body awareness by linking physical sensations with simulated color states in a program that responds to multiple inputs.

Lab 3

Calm Shield

In the "Calm Shield" lab, we program personalized self-regulation tools using micro:bit sensors and conditional logic. By creating responsive devices that detect stress signals like movement or temperature changes, we build digital helpers that deliver breathing prompts, encouraging messages, and calming visuals to support emotional regulation when we need it most.

> Mindfulness Focus

Self-regulation and emotional response tools

> Coding Focus

Conditionals using inputs (if, if else), sensors (shake, temperature)

> Objectives

To help coders create personalized response tools that activate mindfulness strategies using conditionals and micro:bit sensors.

Lab 4

Spin a Calm Story

The "Spin a Calm Story" lab combines creative storytelling with programming logic to build interactive narrative generators. Using variables and random selection, we code micro:bit devices that create personalized calming stories with different peaceful settings, while learning to sequence actions and incorporate timing to craft engaging digital experiences that promote relaxation through guided visualization.

> Mindfulness Focus

Visualization and imaginative calm

> Coding Focus

Variables, pick random, conditional display (if), sequence and timing (pause)

> Objectives

To build imaginative focus and storytelling skills using randomness and conditionals to guide a calming narrative.
