The Digital Creator Series

Adventures in the Pixel Playground

Ages 8 - 11

In this six-week series, young coders embark on creative adventures that transform code into interactive art. They build drawing tools that respond to their commands, animate characters that come alive, and create art that generates itself through algorithms. Each session balances technical skills with artistic expression, and integrates mindfulness practices that support both coding challenges and creative exploration. No prior coding experience required—just curiosity and a love of making things.

In this Series:

Lab 1

Rainbow Trails

The "Rainbow Trails" lab introduces young creators to digital art through motion and color. For new coders, this lab establishes foundational skills: understanding the basics of code blocking on Scratch, using stamps and effects, and experimenting with visual feedback. For more experienced students, the same project becomes a playground for exploring color gradients, movement patterns and visual effects - all while exploring how small changes in code create dramatically different artistic results.

Lab 2

Personal Digital Canvas

In the "Personal Digital Canvas", coders build their own interactive drawing application where clicking colors changes the brush and moving the mouse creates artwork. Developing a tool from scratch reveals how professional digital applications work, empowering young creators to go beyond passively using existing software. Through this project, they learn how programs respond to user input and how variables control program behavior - core coding concepts that emerge from building something personally useful and creative.

Lab 3

Drawing With Code

This lab explores how algorithms can create art. Coders use precise instructions to draw patterns and shapes, discovering how code generates visual results. They explore how loops and repetition can create geometric art, experiencing how complex designs emerge from simple rules, and how changing one value can dramatically transform the output. This lab bridges the gap between logical thinking and creative expression, showing how code itself can be an artistic medium.

Lab 4

Animation Station

"Animation Station" brings digital drawings to life through frame-by-frame animation. Young coders learn the classical animation technique of using sequential images that create the illusion of movement when played quickly. By making subtle variations of a character and coding them to change in sequence, students practice patience, observation, and awareness of how small incremental changes combine to create something dynamic and engaging — lessons that apply both to animation and to life.

Lab 5

The Art Show (Part 1)

"The Art Show" gives students the opportunity to create a personally meaningful piece of interactive digital art during the final two labs of the series. In this first week, students plan and begin building their projects, applying techniques from previous labs — whether creating an animated scene, an interactive drawing experience, or something entirely their own. This open-ended project emphasizes creative ownership and gives students time to experiment, iterate, and develop their artistic vision with instructor support.

Lab 6

The Art Show (Part 2)

In the second week of "The Art Show," young creators refine and complete their interactive art projects. They add finishing touches, troubleshoot challenges, and prepare to share their work. The lab culminates in a presentation where students show their creations to families, practicing both technical skills and the courage to share their creative vision with others. This final showcase celebrates the journey from idea to completion and the unique artistic voice each student has developed.
